Klimabonus 2026 for an EV charger: who, how much, how

Since 1 January 2026 the State refunds half the cost excluding VAT of a private charging point, up to €1,200 for a smart charger. Owner or tenant, house or apartment building: here are the conditions, the amounts, the documents to gather and the mistakes that get an application refused, based on the scheme published on guichet.lu.

Who is entitled to the grant

Any natural person who buys and has a new charging point installed, and who owns or rents the parking space where it is fitted. Tenants are therefore entitled to the grant in the same way as owners; they attach their lease instead of the land registry extract. In a co-owned building, the managing agent can apply with a mandate from the owner.

One grant per parking space: either the owner or the tenant. Per dwelling, one space is eligible, plus every second additional space, up to fifteen. If the owner or tenant changes, a new charger can be funded once the old one has been removed.

  • Parking space in Luxembourg, indoors or outdoors, not accessible to the public.
  • New charger: no second-hand, no exchange, no repair.
  • Power above 3.7 kW, installed by a licensed electrician to the applicable standards.

How much: 50% of the cost excluding VAT, capped

The grant covers 50% of the cost excluding VAT of the charger and its installation, up to a ceiling that depends on the type of charger and the location.

Example: a smart charger invoiced at €2,600 excluding VAT gives €1,200, the ceiling. Invoiced at €1,800 excluding VAT, it gives €900.

  • Standard charger in a single-family house: €750 at most.
  • Smart charger (connected, OCPP 1.6 or later): €1,200 at most.
  • Charger compliant with EN ISO 15118-20:2022: €1,400 at most, a €200 top-up, for 2026 invoices only.
  • In an apartment building: smart charger or one managed by a collective system, €1,200 at most.
  • Collective smart load-management system: 50% of the cost excluding VAT, up to €40,000 per system, one grant per building.

What counts as eligible cost

The bracket and mounting of the charger, electrical and communication cabling, the dedicated RCD and circuit breaker, changes to the consumer unit and shock protection. For a collective system, add the integration of the chargers, programming, power and low-voltage cabling, network reinforcement, a dedicated meter, the IT cabinet, fire-stopping, fire safety equipment and acceptance by an approved body.

  • Excluded: second-hand chargers.
  • Excluded: replacing a charger without an accepted reason.
  • Excluded: commercial installations, which fall under a separate scheme for businesses.

Which invoices, until when

The scheme covers investments invoiced between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030 inclusive. The application is filed after installation, with the paid invoice, no later than one year after 31 December of the invoice year: a charger invoiced in March 2026 can be claimed until 31 December 2027.

The application: documents to gather

The application is filed online on MyGuichet.lu, with LuxTrust or eID authentication, or by post. It is processed by the Environment Agency (Administration de l’environnement), financial aid unit.

  • Bank account details.
  • Copy of the paid invoices, itemised line by line.
  • Land registry extract if you own the space, lease if you rent it.
  • Grid operator compliance certificate or notice of completion of works.
  • Form completed by the installing company.
  • Where applicable: authorisation to use the space, proof of ownership of the building, technical data sheet of the charger.

Do not forget Creos

A charger above 4.6 kW single-phase or of at least 7 kW three-phase must be declared to the grid operator before commissioning. The licensed electrician makes this declaration together with the installation report. It produces the compliance certificate or notice of completion that the grant application requires: no declaration, no document, no grant.

Mistakes that get an application refused or delayed

Most refusals come down to a missing document or a missed deadline, not to the substance of the application.

  • An unpaid or non-itemised invoice: the eligible amount cannot be calculated.
  • A second-hand charger, or a charger of 3.7 kW or less.
  • A late application, more than one year after 31 December of the invoice year.
  • A charger fitted without a licensed electrician: no installer form, no compliance certificate.
  • An application for a space that has already received the grant.

What we hand over for your application

  • Itemised invoice stating the charger, its power and its type.
  • Installing company form, completed.
  • Creos declaration and installation report.
  • Technical data sheet of the charger.
  • The list of documents you still need to attach, depending on your situation.

Frequently asked questions

I am a tenant, am I entitled to the grant?

Yes, just like an owner: you attach your lease. Only one of the two, owner or tenant, can receive it for a given space.

Is the grant paid before the works?

No: the application is filed after installation, with the paid invoice. Count the refund in your budget, not in the initial financing.

Is a 22 kW charger subsidised more?

No: the ceiling depends on the type of charger (standard, smart, ISO 15118-20) and the location, not on its power, above the 3.7 kW minimum.

What is the difference between a standard and a smart charger?

A smart charger communicates (OCPP 1.6 or later) and can be controlled: load management, scheduling, consumption tracking. It unlocks the €1,200 ceiling and is mandatory in apartment buildings.

What about co-owned buildings?

Each co-owner or tenant can apply for their own charger, smart or managed by the collective system; the co-owners’ association can additionally have the collective load-management system subsidised at 50%, up to €40,000.

Where do I apply?

On MyGuichet.lu with LuxTrust or eID, or by post to the Environment Agency. The financial aid unit can be reached on (+352) 247 59 044.
